AMBASSADOR SHIRLYN GATHONI FACE OF KENYA UK 2019

I am 21 and currently studying French, Philosophy and Arabic in France at the University of Strasbourg for my year abroad before continuing my studies back in the UK at the University of Nottingham. Along with speaking Swahili and some Kikuyu I hope my linguistic skills will act as a stepping stone in my pursuit of becoming a global citizen. As a member of the Sea Cadets from a young age, I immersed myself in water sports such as sailing and rowing which I continue to do competitively at university together with gospel choir. Through my hunger for adventure I have embarked on a World First Expedition to Greenland where I climbed uncharted territory. I am intrigued in gaining more experience in the world of work and because of this I did an internship at the Bank of England last summer as a data analyst and will be working with Teach First this summer. Living in Strasbourg, home of the European Council, I am considering international human rights law when I finish my degree. Following on from my role as head girl at school it was imperative for my engagement with the student body in working together to improve our community, through this I learnt that young people have a great deal to contribute when given the platform. I breakdown stereotypes and want young Kenyan people to do the same, therefore I am supporting ‘Feed A Soul’ which is part of the ‘Stand Up Shout Out’ charity allowing young people to be heard.

This girl will really go far. She's thinking outside the box, which is beneficial to the youths in many ways. Bravo Shirlyn!
