Hoooorrray! So I finally did it …… I have managed to upload the video onto my blog!!! It has taken a while but I had my eureka moment this evening as I was leaving the gym. Proves persistence pays and patience is a virtue.

I say this because I got to a stage where I asked myself, "Why am I spending so much time and pestering all the computer geeks I know to try and share this video?! What's worse is that, I cringe listening to myself!!! If I was to do that feature again, trust me it would be a very different piece!! So why am I determined to embarrass myself in the process?!

Simple, This whole thing is all about representing, It is not about me, its about 'The Home, the children, the effort, the course, the vision and the future'.  As you will see in the video I was blessed to spend a day with the man behind this mission, the late Fr D Agostino. On the day he explained to me his vision and believe me when I say his passion for the work he had committed his life to, was evident in every word he spoke. More than a decade later, He is gone but his legacy lives on.

I feel really privileged to be part of FOKUK 2014 because I stand a chance of among other responsibilities, highlighting and fully supporting this charity that upholds my belief that GOOD AND AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE is a HUMAN RIGHT!

I'd like to warn you that some of the pictures are disturbing….

Hello everybody,
Looks like Team Lissa is now ready to take off with everything falling into place! The latest development comes in the shape of an email of support and blessings from Nyumbani Children's Home. As my email below explains, In 2001 as budding news reporter, I did spend a day in the Home and met its Founder, the late Fr. D Agosino, a very inspiring man.
I have tried to upload the video here, however as technology has never been my forte, that proved an impossible task. Plan B is to try and share it on my facebook page, so watch out for that. But please be aware and I truly apologise in advance …. The sound and video quality are not very good, there is also the issue of embarassing commentary and finally my piece to camera is shocking!!) I was only a very young girl then starting out. :-)
What is important here is the content of the news item. I hope you will all see why I feel passionate about  Nyumbani Children's Home and really want to shine a light on their efforts…

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am a contestant in this years' Face of Kenya UK (FOKUK2014). As a participant, I am required to select a charity that I feel passionate about and can support during my term (if I win).

In 2001 as a young journalist for the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation in Kenya, I was assigned to cover a visit by an American senate to Nyumbani Children's Home for the channel's Weekend feature. It was during this time that I got the opportunity to meet the founder of the Home, the late Fr. D Agostino and the children and spent the day together.

My experience from that day is one of the most humbling and memorable experiences of my life. Dr D Agostino's dedication to these orphaned children deeply touched my heart. I later compiled a very touching news feature which I still keep a copy of.

My reason for writing is to kindly seek permission to have Nyumbani Children's Home as my charity of choice. HIV is a scourge that has scarred our nation but we cannot sit back and do nothing. Nyumbani Children's Home is an example of this by not just housing these orphans but also campaigning for access to drugs for all and contributing to research in its laboratory.

I hope you will accept my request to use the FOKUK platform to support your very worthy course.

Sincerely,
Lissa MARANG'A

THE REPLY ……

Dear Lissa,

Greetings from Nyumbani.

What a lovely email to receive, expressing how your covering of a senator's visit to Nyumbani in 2001 has been an inspiration in your life.

We will be very happy for you to name Nyumbani as your charity of choice for the Face of Kenya contest 2014.

We wish you every success.

God bless,

Sister Mary

Biography

Jambo, Habari, Hello everyone. My name is Lissa Marang’a. The reason I have joined Face of Kenya UK 2014 is because I am passionate about my country and especially how it is perceived by the world.

REPUTATION

What is in a name? If you ask me ...... Everything! I fully understand how important reputation is to a person, an organisation and even a country. In the global village that we now live in, reputation couldn't be more important if we are to see our economic growth maintain a steady upward trend.

There's no doubt that Kenya continues to gain credibility around the world year on year. Like any nation we suffer set backs and require attention to progress in many areas. I believe there's still a lot to be done to get us to where we ought to be.

With a background in journalism I have experienced the power of the media in moulding opinions the world over. As part of my Masters Degree in Multi Media Journalism, I wrote a thesis on the negative reporting of Africa by the western press. One of the conclusions confirmed that we need to protect our name/reputation/brand!

I believe that the Face of Kenya UK 2014 will provide me an opportunity to correct any false perceptions, positively push forward the Kenyan brand and showcase the wonders of which Kenya is inherently proud.

Born in Malindi, I lived and breathed the Kenyan experience for over 20 years before relocating to the coastal town of Bournemouth in the UK. I visit my parents in Nakuru annually to where they have retired. By holding a solid understanding of the two very different worlds I confidently feel that Kenya has a lot to offer the world.

As the face of our great Kenyan nation in the UK, I will represent the true image of Kenya. From the offset I will roll up my sleeves and assist Brand Kenya to the standing within the world it rightly deserves. Your support in achieving this incredible opportunity is warmly appreciated.

ASANTE .. THANK YOU.
